BioPortal provides a user-friendly World Wide Web (WWW) interface to biosoftware using a set of Common Gateway Interfaces (CGI) programs in PERL and C on your Biocomputing and Bioinformatics server. It helps the researchers to access on-line computing and Bioinformatics databases which your system presently provides.

This software is considered outdated and maintained purely for instructional purposes. Users are encouraged to use EMBOSS or other similar software for actual research. For a list of software available, please visit our resource page.

Overview

Every biological scientist today is faced with an overwhelming explosion of information in the bioscience disciplines due to genome sequencing projects. The resulting increase in the number of databases, software tools, journal publications and reports has propelled biological computation into a rapidly emerging discipline. Moreover, the computational tools currently available have become cardinal requirement for any bioresearch to stay abreast and keep pace with research at the cutting edge. It is absolutely essential for any laboratory or research department to have rapid and convenient aaccess to such computational and database search tools over a computer network enviroment. Learning how to install and run software can be quite arduous and time consuming. We have tried to provide a solution to this enigma by providing a user friendly, form-based World Wide Web interface for the most widely used Bio-software. This interface will help improve the productivity of bioscientist by streamlining their computing tasks. The form which holds the parameters for the current analysis can be sent to the machine at the click of a button. The results can be visualised and saved to a file. Special features liike making the programs format independent can be added which will make the interface to thee program more facile. Also, resources such as interfaces for other software, hyperlinks to associated data, and other customisable services can be provided.
